Mastotermitidae
Mastotermitidae (subclass Pterygota, order Isoptera) Family of ‘lower’ termites containing only one surviving species, Mastotermes darwiniensis, which inhabits northern Australia. Colonies may contain one million inhabitants, living in many underground nests connected by covered passages built along the surface of the ground. Their very catholic diet makes them extremely destructive.
