Gotama
Gotama or Gautama (Pāli, Skt.).
1. The clan (Skt., gotra) to which the historical Buddha belonged. It is hence the name by which his non-Buddhist contemporaries refer to him, and a name used when distinguishing him from other Buddhas.
2. The founder of the Nyāya school of Hindu philosophy (darśana), and author of a law book (dharmaśāstra).
3. A Vedic ṛṣi, to whom the composition of one of the finest hymns in the Ṛg Veda (1.92) is attributed.
