Daun, Leopold Joseph Maria, Graf von
Leopold Joseph Maria Daun, Graf von (lā´ōpôlt yō´zĕf märē´ä gräf fən doun), 1705–66, Austrian field marshal. He gained distinction in the War of the Austrian Succession. Daun later reorganized the Austrian army and gave the officers corps a new sense of professionalism. In the Seven Years War he defeated the Prussian forces at Kolin (1757) and Hochkirch (1758) but was defeated at Torgau (1760) after being severely wounded. Daun was a leading exponent of the classic war of maneuver.
