electric field (electrostatic field) Region around an electric charge in which any charged particle experiences a force. The strength of the field (Ε) upon unit charge at a distance r from a charge Q is equal to Q/4πr2Ε, where Ε is the permittivity (degree to which molecules polarize). A changing magnetic field can also create an electric field.
