Kenton (real name, Kornstein), Egon
Kenton (real name, Kornstein), Egon, Hungarian violinist, musicologist, and music librarian; b. Nagyszalonta, May 22, 1891; d. Paris, Dec. 3, 1987. He studied violin with Hubay at the Budapest Royal Academy of Music, graduating in 1911. He was violist in the Hungarian String Quartet (1911–23), and then emigrated to the U.S. In 1947 he received his M.A. in musicology from N.Y.U., and subsequently taught mu-sicology at the Univ. of Conn, in Storrs (1950–61). From 1961 to 1971 he served as librarian of the Mannes Coll. of Music in N.Y. He wrote the first English-language study of the life and music of Giovanni Gabrieli (Rome, 1967).
