Richard Christopher Carrington
1826-1875
English astronomer who discovered that the location of sunspots on the sun's surface follows a regular pattern throughout the solar cycle. He discovered that the sun rotates not as a rigid body, all at the same rate, but as a fluid, with parts near the equator moving more quickly than parts near the poles. He also made a catalog of stars in the northern sky near the pole star.
