Ponthiey, Adelaide (fl. 1248)

French crusader. Flourished in 1248 in the Middle East and France.

Very little is known about Adelaide Ponthiey. She was a French woman from a lower noble family who joined the army of King Louis IX (St. Louis) of France when he led the Seventh Crusade to the Middle East. Ponthiey gained considerable fame for her skill with a sword and for her bravery; after the time of the crusade, however, she disappears from the chronicles.
