Cunningham, Ann (d. 1647)
English noble and rebel. Died in 1647 in England.
Although Lady Ann Cunningham was one of many religious activists during the Protestant Reformation in England, not many women pursued their activism as militantly as she. A member of the lower nobility, she was a devoted convert to the strict doctrine of Calvinism. She believed that England should be converted to her faith, by force if necessary. To accomplish this, she rode across the countryside accompanied by other Calvinist women rebels, terrorizing the populace. She rode fully armed with daggers and pistols, as did her women companions. Their militaristic ways were not supported by the rest of the Calvinist minority in England, and they accomplished very little for their cause.
