undine , in folklore, female water sprite who could acquire a soul by marrying a human being. If, however, her lover proved unfaithful, she had to return to the sea. The legend is the subject of Baron de La Motte-Fouqué's Undine and Jean Giraudoux's Ondine. |

undine a female spirit or nymph imagined as inhabiting water, a water-nymph; recorded from the early 19th century, the word comes from modern Latin Undina (in Paracelsus De Nymphis), from Latin unda ‘wave’.

undine (un-deen) n. a small rounded container, usually made of glass, for solutions used to wash out the eye. It has a small neck for filling and a long tapering spout with a narrow outlet.
