taut
taut, the maritime word meaning tight, usually in relation to a sailing vessel's rigging or the hauling of ropes. The word is also used for many similar meanings, as ‘He's a taut hand’, meaning ‘he's a stern disciplinarian’; ‘a taut ship’, meaning that it is a smart ship and well disciplined.
