[in sing.] the time in the evening when the sun disappears or daylight fades: sunset was still a couple of hours away. ∎ the colors and light visible in the sky on an occasion of the sun's disappearance in the evening, considered as a view or spectacle: a blue and gold sunset. ∎ fig. a period of decline, esp. the last years of a person's life: the sunset of his life. |

sunset
sunset ride (or sail) off into the sunset used (frequently ironically) to denote a happy ending, and derived from a conventional closing scene of many films. The expression is recorded from the mid 20th century.
Sunset Boulevard a road which links the centre of Los Angeles with the Pacific Ocean 48 km (30 miles) to the west. The eastern section of the road between Fairfax Avenue and Beverly Hills is known as Sunset Strip. |
