site of special scientific interest (SSSI) In Britain, an area which, in the view of the Government, is of particular interest because of its fauna, flora, or geological or physiographic features. Once it has been designated, the owner of the site is required to notify the relevant authorities and obtain special permission before undertaking operations that would alter its characteristics.
