sirocco
sirocco, or scirocco, the name of a hot southerly wind which blows across the Mediterranean after crossing the Sahara Desert. On occasions it can blow for days or weeks on end, usually during the summer months, bringing sand and acute discomfort with it. When it crosses the Mediterranean it gathers a lot of moisture because of its high temperature and by the time it reaches Malta, Sicily, and southern Italy it is very humid and enervating. It is also often a precursor of a cyclonic storm. See also khamsin; simoon.

sirocco
sirocco [Ital., from Arab. sharq =east], hot, dust-laden, dry, southerly wind originating in the N African desert (most commonly in the spring) and reaching Italy and nearby Mediterranean areas. The term more generally denotes any oppressive, warm, southerly or southeasterly wind in this region. |
