settee

settee

settee, a two-masted ship of the Mediterranean. They were lateen rigged on both masts, and were often used as a transport for spare galley crews. They were single decked with a long, sharp bow, and belonged more to the eastern Mediterranean than to the western. Their dates are from the 16th to about the mid-19th century. Occasionally they were called balancelles, from the double lateen rig. It was a settee, or balancelle, that was used by gun-runners in Joseph Conrad's novel The Arrow of Gold.
