sago palm
sago palm (fern palm) Feather-leaved palm tree native to swampy areas of Malaysia and Polynesia. Its thick trunk contains sago, a starch used in foodstuffs. The sago grows for 15 years, flowers once and then dies when the fruit ripens. Height: 1.2–9.1m (4–30ft). Family Arecaceae/Palmae; species Metroxylon sagu.
