Roaring Forties
Roaring Forties, the area in the southern hemisphere between the latitudes of 40° and 50° S. where the prevailing wind blows strongly from the west unimpeded by continental land masses. Sailing ships in the Australian trade used to make for this area after rounding the Cape of Good Hope, as they could then rely on the westerly gales to lift them along their way. The expression is also frequently used to describe the very rough parts of the oceans in the northern hemisphere between the same latitudes, particularly in the North Atlantic. See also run the easting down, to.
