procaine
procaine , anesthetic drug, commonly called novocaine, that gives prolonged relief from pain (see anesthesia ). It is used as a local anesthetic and in rectal and other surgery . It is marketed under the trade name Novocain. |

procaine (procaine hydrochloride) (proh-kayn) n. a local anaesthetic administered by injection but now seldom used, having a shorter duration of action and being less effective than lidocaine.
