Panther

Panther
1. F9F-5 a straight-wing jet fighter aircraft, a conventional aircraft except for the refinement of its details and ease of maintenance. Although its performance and handling were inferior to that of good fighter aircraft, it made an excellent fighter-bomber and was used in combat during the Korean War. It had only limited commonality with the Cougar, and the two fighter aircraft have the same designation only for political reasons.

2. World War II–era German tank. See Tanks, German, World War II-era.

panther

panther a leopard, especially a black one; originally, an exotic spotted wild cat believed to be distinct from the leopard. Fabulous accounts included the belief that the animal was a hybrid between the lion and the ‘pard’, and that the panther exhaled a sweet fragrance. In later literary use, the panther is also taken as the type of a fierce, powerful, and elusive creature.
