julep or mint julep, alcoholic beverage of the S United States. Its basis is properly bourbon whiskey, which is combined with water, sugar, crushed ice, and mint leaves. Juleps are sometimes made with other liquors or flavorings.

julep Whiskey or brandy flavoured with mint and served over ice. Originally developed as a protective against malaria (Old White Springs, Virginia, 1809) and made using brandy; later whiskey was used; the name derives from the Arabic julab, for rosewater.
