hydroplane
hy·dro·plane / ˈhīdrəˌplān/ • n. 1. a light fast motorboat designed to skim over the surface of water. 2. a finlike attachment that enables a moving submarine to rise or fall in the water. 3. a seaplane. • v. [intr.] 1. (of a vehicle) slide uncontrollably on the wet surface of a road: a motorist whose car hydroplaned and crashed into a tree. 2. (of a boat) skim over the surface of water with its hull lifted. |

hydroplane
hydroplane small, high-powered racing boat designed to skim along the surface of the water. Its hull is so shaped that at high speeds the bow is tilted up out of the water, reducing the effect of frictional drag. Hydroplanes are commonly powered by outboard motors. |
