harelip

harelip The description ‘like the lip of a hare’ was first applied (in Greek) by Galen to a cleft or ridge in the upper lip which results from defective development during fetal life. The cleft in the lip may or may not be accompanied by a cleft in the palate. Such defects can now be satisfactorily repaired.
