gauss [for C. F. Gauss ], abbr. G, unit of magnetic flux density (see flux, magnetic ) equal to 0.0001 (10 ^-4 ) weber per square meter. Since this unit is derived from the cgs system of units rather than the mks system , it is largely obsolete. See electric and magnetic units .

Gauss A normal polarity chron in the late Pliocene, preceded by the Gilbert and followed by the Matuyama reversed chrons, and radiometrically dated at 3.58–2.60 Ma ( Harland et al., 1982). The Gauss contains at least two reversed polarity subchrons: Mammoth and Kaena.
