gar Primitive, freshwater bony fish found in shallow waters of North America. Bony, diamond-shaped plates cover its long, cylindrical body. Its snout is studded with teeth. Length: to 3m (10ft); weight: to 135kg (300lb). Family Lepisosteidae.
