azalea

Azalea

Azalea ♀ Modern coinage from the name of the flowering shrub, one of the most recent of the names taken from terms denoting flora from the 19th century onwards. The shrub was named in the 18th century with the feminine form of Greek azaleos ‘dry’, because it flourishes in dry soil.
