as·sign·ment / əˈsīnmənt/ • n. 1. a task or piece of work assigned to someone as part of a job or course of study: a homework assignment. ∎ the allocation of a job or task to someone. ∎ the task or post to which one has been appointed. 2. the attribution of someone or something as belonging: the assignment of individuals to particular social positions. 3. an act of making a legal transfer of a right, property, or liability: an assignment of leasehold property. ∎ a document effecting such a transfer. |

Assignment
ASSIGNMENTA transfer of rights in real property orpersonal propertyto another that gives the recipient—the transferee—the rights that the owner or holder of the property—the transferor—had prior to the transfer. An assignment of wages is the transfer of the right to collect wages from the wage earner to his or her creditor. Statutes regulate the extent to which an assignment may be made. |
