Wicklow
Wicklow , county (1991 pop. 97,265), 782 sq mi (2,025 sq km), E Republic of Ireland. The county seat is Wicklow . The Wicklow Mts. and their foothills occupy almost the entire area of the county; Lugnaquilla (3,039 ft/926 m) is the highest peak. The Liffey and the Slaney rivers rise in Wicklow, and there are lakes and picturesque glens. Sheep and cattle are raised in the region, and grains are cultivated. Wicklow also has copper mines and a hydroelectric plant has been constructed in the area. Its proximity to Dublin makes the region a popular one with tourists. Glendalough has notable ecclesiastical remains. The people of the mountainous district were long able to maintain their independence of English control, hence Wicklow was not organized as a shire until 1606. |

Wicklow
Wicklow (Cill Mhantáin), Ireland Wykingalo, Wykynoelo A county, mountains, and seaport with a name meaning ‘Vikings' Meadow’ from the Old Scandinavian vikingr ‘Viking’ and ló ‘meadow’. The Irish name means ‘Mantan's Church’ after the obscure St Mantan who is said to have built a church here in the 5th century.

Wicklow
Wicklow County in Leinster province, e Republic of Ireland; the county town is Wicklow. The Wicklow Mountains dominate the county. The Liffey, Slaney, and Avoca are the chief rivers. Farmers rear sheep and cattle and grow cereals. Wicklow's beautiful scenery attracts many tourists. Area: 2025sq km (782sq mi). Pop. (1996) 102,683.

Wicklow
Wicklow town (1991 pop. 6,215), seat of Co. Wicklow, E Republic of Ireland, on the Irish Sea. It is a seaport and market for an area of potato growing and livestock raising. Chemicals, fertilizers, and farm implements are the chief manufactures. There are flour mills in the town. Tourism is also important. |
