Sisulu, Walter

Sisulu, Walter (1912–2003) South African civil-rights activist, a fierce opponent of apartheid. Sisulu became secretary general of the African National Congress (ANC) in 1949. The ANC was declared illegal in 1961, and Sisulu, Nelson Mandela, and six others were sentenced (1964) to life imprisonment. Sisulu was released (1989) as part of the reforms of F. W. de Klerk and, after the legalization of the ANC, became its deputy president (1991–94).
