Wakefield

Wakefield, Canada, Jamaica, New Zealand, UK, USA 1. New Zealand (South Island): named after Arthur Wakefield (1799–1843), brother of Edward Gibbon Wakefield (1796–1862) who did much to colonize New Zealand and who was instrumental in founding the New Zealand Association in 1837. Arthur was killed here by Maori.2. UK (England): formerly Wachefeld ‘Open Land where Festivities occur’ from the Old English wacu ‘festivity’ or ‘wake’ and feld.

Wakefield

Wakefield family estate of George Washington, on the Potomac River, E Va.; part of the George Washington Birthplace National Monument (see National Parks and Monuments , table). John Washington, the great-grandfather of George, settled there in 1664. The house in which George was born was built by his father, Augustine Washington. It was destroyed by fire in 1779, but on its original foundations a new house, similar to the original, was completed in 1931.
