Trobriand Islands, situated north-east of the Papua peninsula. The Japanese did not occupy them during the Pacific war, but a US airstrip was built on the principal one, Kiriwina, after troops of MacArthur'sAlamo Force landed there and on another, Woodlark Island, on 30 June 1943. The landings, the first Allied ones of any size in the South-West Pacific Area, heralded the start of MacArthur's offensive (CARTWHEEL) to capture Rabaul, the main Japanese base in the area, as the Kiriwina airfield brought it within fighter range. However, at the Quebec conference in August 1943 (see QUADRANT) it was decided to bypass Rabaul instead and the airfields were used to help neutralize it.
