Treblinka
Treblinka was a Nazi death camp located on the River Bug 72 km. (45 mi.) from Warsaw. As part of OPERATION REINHARD, it opened in July 1942 and was used to exterminate the inhabitants of the Warsaw ghetto (see also Warsaw risings). Its efficiency in implementing the Final Solution was horrific: at least 900,000 Jews are said to have died there, making it second only to Auschwitz in this respect. In August 1943 a camp revolt by 700 prisoners resulted in the death of 15 guards. But only 12 prisoners managed to escape, the rest being killed, and in November 1943 the camp was razed to the ground. See also concentration camps.
