Tibullus (Albius Tibullus) , c.55? BC-19 BC, Roman elegiac poet, b. Pedum, near Praeneste. Probably of the equestrian order, he was a friend of Messala, whom he accompanied on campaign. A master of the Latin love elegy, Tibullus wrote two books of verse (concerned, respectively, with "Delia" and "Nemesis" —names symbolic of his loves) that were published during his lifetime; some doubtfully attributed posthumous pieces plus works by other poets constitute a third book.

Tibullus, Albius (c.48–19 bc), Roman elegiac poet, noted for the refinement and simplicity of his plain style and his idealization of the countryside. Of the three books that bear his name, the first is a celebration of his love for a mistress (Delia) and a boy (Marathus), the second a short account of his love for a woman whom he calls Nemesis, and the third a collection of poems by members of his literary circle. His influence has been discerned in Campion and Herrick, and Dryden compared him to Sedley.
