thyroiditis

thyroiditis (th'y-roid-I-tis) n. inflammation of the thyroid gland. acute t. thyroiditis due to bacterial infection. chronic t. thyroiditis that is commonly caused by an abnormal immune response (see autoimmunity) in which lymphocytes invade the tissues of the gland. subacute t. (de Quervain's t.) thyroiditis caused by a viral infection. See also Hashimoto's disease.
