Texel

Texel, battle of the

Texel, battle of the, 1673. On 21 August was fought the last battle in the third Anglo-Dutch War. The Dutch were expecting a large convoy from the Indies and were also threatened with an invasion. De Ruyter took the initiative though at a considerable disadvantage against a joint Anglo-French fleet under Rupert. Cornelis Tromp in the Gouden Leeuw fought an individual action against Sir Edward Spragge in the Royal Prince, much to the advantage of the former. Dutch superiority in gunnery gave them the upper hand, though no major ships were lost on either side. But the convoy came home safely and the proposed landing was abandoned. Peace followed six months later.
