The Oxford Dictionary of Phrase and Fable | 2006 | | Copyright

talisman an object, typically an inscribed ring or stone, that is thought to have magic powers and to bring good luck. The word is recorded from the mid 17th century, and is based on Arabic ṭilsam, apparently from an alteration of late Greek telesma ‘completion, religious rite’.
