Tacitus (full name Publius Cornelius Tacitus, or Gaius, Cornelius Tacitus) (c.56–c.120 AD) Roman historian. His major works on the history of the Roman Empire, only partially preserved, are the Annals (covering the years 14–68) and the Histories (69–96). They are written in a concise style, pervaded by a deep pessimism about the course of Roman history since the end of the Republic.
