McNair, Sylvia (b Mansfield, Ohio, 1956). Amer. soprano. Début in Messiah, Indianapolis 1980. Opera début NY 1982 (Sandrina in Haydn's L'infedeltà delusa). European début, Schwetzingen 1984 (created title-role in Kelterborn's Ophelia). Débuts: Glyndebourne 1989; Salzburg Fest. and CG 1990; NY Met 1991. Has sung with many leading Eur. and Amer. orchs. and with ens. cond. by Harnoncourt and Gardiner. Marian Anderson Award 1990.
