Sunrise

Sunrise city (1990 pop. 64,407), Broward co., SE Fla., a residential suburb 8 mi (13 km) W of Fort Lauderdale; inc. 1961 as Sunrise Golf Village. It is a major office and commercial center and the site of Sawgrass Mills, one of the largest malls in the United States. Sunrise also is the home of the National Hockey League's Florida Panthers.

sunrise The instant when the upper limb of the Sun first appears above the horizon. At this instant the true zenith distance of the centre of the Sun's disk is about 90° 50′, since the centre of the Sun is 16′ below its upper limb and atmospheric refraction on the horizon is about 34′.

[in sing.] the time in the morning when the sun appears or full daylight arrives: an hour before sunrise. ∎  the colors and light visible in the sky on an occasion of the sun's first appearance in the morning, considered as a view or spectacle: a spectacular sunrise over the summit of the mountain.
