Suleiman the Magnificent

Suleiman the Magnificent name given to Suleiman I (c.1494–1566), sultan of the Ottoman Empire 1520–66; also known as Suleiman the Lawgiver. The Ottoman Empire reached its fullest extent under his rule; his conquests included Belgrade (1521), Rhodes (1522), and Tripoli (1551), in addition to those in Iraq (1534) and Hungary (1562). He was also a noted administrator and patron of the arts.

Suleiman I ( the Magnificent) (1494–1566) Ottoman Sultan (1520–66). He succeeded his father, Selim I. Suleiman captured Rhodes from the Knights Hospitallers and launched a series of campaigns against the Austrian Habsburgs, defeating the Hungarians at Mohács (1526), and subsequently controlling most of Hungary. In 1529, his troops besieged Vienna. Suleiman's admiral, Barbarossa, created a navy that dominated the Mediterranean and ensured Ottoman control of much of the North African coastal region.
