Suez
Suez (as‐Suways), Egypt Clysma, Kolsum A governorate and a city‐port at the southern end of the Suez Canal. An ancient Greek port, the name was changed to Kolsum in the 7th century when the Muslims arrived. The Ottoman Turks converted it into an important naval and trading station in the 16th century. It gives its name to the Suez Canal and the Gulf of Suez. The meaning of the present name is obscure. Grammatically it is the diminutive of sus ‘woodworm’ or ‘liquorice’, although this certainly does not seem to be relevant here.
