Southampton

Southampton, Canada, UK, USA UK (England): formerly Homtun, Suthhamtunam, and Hantone ‘Settlement on the Promontory’ from the Old English hamm and tūn. By 962 sūth ‘south’ had been added to differentiate the city from the northern Hampton (now Northampton) which represented Hāmtūn ‘home farm’.

Southampton Port and county district in Hampshire, s England. At the head of Southampton Water, and a port since Roman times, it is Britain's principal passenger port and a major commercial port, now heavily containerized. Industries: shipbuilding, engineering, oil refining. Pop. (1994) 214,000.
