Solomon Willard

Solomon Willard 1783-1861, American architect and sculptor, b. Petersham, Mass. Arriving in Boston in 1804, he eventually became a leading architect; he both designed and supervised the erection of the Bunker Hill monument. He carved the architectural detail of many Boston buildings, as well as ships' figureheads, including the figure for the frigate Washington (U.S. Naval Academy, Annapolis, Md.). He taught drawing and sculpture in Boston, where Horatio Greenough was one of his pupils.

Willard, Solomon (1783–1861). American architect. Influenced by the work of Latrobe. Willard brought the Greek Revival to Boston. He designed the United States Branch Bank, Boston (1822–4), the Norfolk County Court House, Dedham (1824–6), and the Suffolk County Court House, Boston (1835), all in Greek Doric, and all in MA. He was also responsible for the Town Hall, Quincy, MA (1844). From 1824 to 1842 he concerned himself with the Bunker Hill Monument, Charlestown, MA, a vast obelisk with an Egyptian Revival base: he published Plans and Sections of the Obelisk on Bunker's Hill in 1843.
