Everest, Mount (Nepali Sagarmatha; Chinese Qomolangma) The highest mountain in the world (8848 m, 29028 feet), in the Himalayas on the border of Nepal and Tibet. It is named after Sir George Everest (1790–1866), surveyor-general of India, and its summit was first reached in 1953 by the New Zealand mountaineer and explorer (Sir) Edmund Hillary and the Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay.

Everest, Mount (Nepalese Sagarmatha; Tibetan Chomo-Langma, Mother Goddess of the World) World's highest mountain, in the central Himalayas on the borders of Tibet and Nepal. It is named after George Everest, first surveyor general of India. It was first climbed on May 29, 1953, by Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzing Norgay. Height: 8850m (29,035ft).

Sir George Everest

Sir George Everest , 1790–1866, British surveyor, b. Breconshire, Wales. He worked on the trigonometrical survey of India from 1806 to 1843. He became superintendent of the survey in 1823 and surveyor general of India in 1830; Mt. Everest is named for him. He was knighted in 1861.
