Sir Georg Solti

Sir Georg Solti , 1912-97, English conductor, b. Hungary. He made his conducting debut in Budapest (1933) and later led orchestras in Switzerland, Germany, and France. Solti gained fame as music director (1969-91) of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was also principal conductor of the London Philharmonic (1979-83) and several other orchestras.

Solti, Sir Georg (1912–97) British conductor, b. Hungary. He was music director of Covent Garden Opera (now Royal Opera), London (1961–71); Orchestre de Paris (1971–75); and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra (1969–91). An outstanding operatic music director, Solti was the first conductor to record (1965) Wagner's entire Ring cycle.
