Siloam
Siloam A pool of water in Jerusalem which served as a reservoir. It was connected by a tunnel to the spring of Gihon and an inscription was discovered by two boys in 1880 which explains that the tunnel was dug from each end; the Hebrew script suggests a date not long before 701 BCE, when Sennacherib laid siege to the city; so the tunnel would have been part of the defence system. Isaiah mentions that its waters ‘flow gently’ (8: 6), and there is a record in John 9: 7 of Jesus healing a blind man by means of this water. The tower of Siloam (Luke 13: 4) which so disastrously collapsed was part of the fortifications.

Siloam
Siloam , pool, SW corner of Jerusalem in the Kidron valley, mentioned in the Bible. A nearby 1,700-foot-long (518 m) tunnel, dating from the time of Hezekiah , diverted water underneath Jerusalem to the pool inside the city wall; it deprived the invading Assyrians of water during their siege of Jeruslaem. An inscription discovered in 1880 describes the cutting of the tunnel. It appears as Shiloah in Isaiah, and as Shelah in Nehemiah. Jesus directed the healed blind man to go and wash in the pool. |

Siloam
Siloam (in the New Testament) a spring and pool of water near Jerusalem, where a man born blind was told by Jesus to wash, thereby gaining sight (John 9:7).
