September
September the ninth month of the year, in the northern hemisphere usually considered the first month of autumn. The name comes (in late Old English) from Latin, from septem ‘seven’ (being originally the seventh month of the Roman year). The native Old English name was hærfestmōnaþ harvest month.
September blow soft, till the fruit's in the loft traditional weather rhyme, recorded from the late 16th century. September massacres a mass killing of political prisoners in Paris on 2–6 September 1792, an event which initiated the Terror. |
