Sārnāth

Sārnāth. An important Indian Buddhist centre located some 6 miles north of present-day Vārāṇasī. It is famed as the location of the Deer Park, the site of the first discourse taught by the Buddha after his enlightenment (bodhi). Visited again by the Buddha on an number of occasions later in his life, Sārnāth became an important Buddhist centre until the 12th century ce. Modern excavations have revealed extensive remains of vihāras and stūpas, including the great Dhamekh and Dharmarājika Stūpas, as well as numerous statues of the Buddha.

Sārnāth

Sārnāth. North of the Ganges (Gaṅgā), near Vārāṇasī (Kāśi), the place where the Buddha delivered his first sermon. The exact spot in Sārnāth where this took place is known as the Deer Park (Iṣipataṇa) and the event is called ‘the turning of the Wheel of Dharma’ (dharmacakra-pravartana).

Sārnāth has continued to be an important pilgrimage site.

Sarnath

Sarnath , archaeological site, SE Uttar Pradesh, India, 4 mi (6.4 km) N of Varanasi (Benares). It is the site of the deer park ( mrigadawa ) where, according to tradition, Buddha first preached. Buddhist monuments include an inscribed pillar (3d cent. BC) of Emperor Asoka and a stupa (7th cent. AD), c.140 ft (42 m), high.
