Sapporo, Hokkaidō/Japan Laid out in 1871. The name may come from the Ainu satuporobetsu ‘a river which runs along a plain filled with reeds or ‘a long dry river bed’; or from the Ainu sachi‐poro‐kotan ‘large grass‐covered plain’. Most place names in Hokkaidō are from Ainu, but when the Japanese arrived they replaced these with Chinese characters.
