Salé , Arab. Sla, city (1994 pop. 579,850), NW Morocco, near Rabat. It has industries producing flour and fine carpets. The harbor was long a haven for pirates, who came to be called Sallee rovers.

Salé (Sla), Morocco Founded as a walled city in the 10th century, it became the Republic of Bou Regreg, a base for Barbary pirates, in 1629–66. The name is of Berber origin and means ‘Rock’.
