Ruth Crawford

Ruth Crawford 1901-53, American composer, b. East Liverpool, Ohio. Crawford attended music schools in Jacksonville, Fla., and Chicago. Her most frequently performed composition is a string quartet (1931). She also collected and published American folk music with her husband, the musicologist and composer Charles Seeger, father of the folk singer Pete Seeger.

Crawford [Seeger], Ruth (Porter) (b East Liverpool, Ohio, 1901; d Chevy Chase, Md., 1953). Amer. composer. Taught at Sch. of Mus. Arts, Jacksonville, Fla., 1918–21. At Amer. Cons., Chicago, 1920–9 as student and teacher. Studied comp. NY 1929 with Charles Seeger, whom she married. Transcr. several thousand Amer. folksongs from recordings in Library of Congress and wrote pf. acc. for over 300. Her comps., atonal and often dissonant, anticipated many avant-garde procedures. They incl. 9 pf. preludes (1924–8), vn. sonata (1927), str. qt. (1931), some songs, and other works.
