Kreutzer, Rodolphe

Kreutzer, Rodolphe (b Versailles, 1766; d Geneva, 1831). Fr. violinist and composer. Début Paris, Concert Spirituel 1780 (in Stamitz conc.). 1st vn. in Chapelle du Roi 1785, and soloist at Paris Théâtre des Italiens 1790. Two operas prod. there. Prof. of vn., Paris Cons. 1795–1826, compiling (with Baillot) the establishment's vn. method. In 1798 visited Vienna where he met Beethoven, who ded. to him his A major sonata, Op.47, completed 1803, and known as Kreutzer Sonata. 1st vn., Paris Opéra, from 1801, cond. there 1816–24, dir. 1824–6. Retired 1826. Comp. over 40 operas and ballets; 19 vn. concs.; 17 str. qts.; 15 trios; 3 double concs.; sonatas; and many vn. pieces incl. 20 Études ou Caprices.

Rodolphe Kreutzer

Rodolphe Kreutzer , 1766–1831, French composer and violinist. He was professor of violin at the Paris Conservatory from its founding in 1795 until 1826 and was one of the authors of the violin method taught there. Although he composed some 40 operas and numerous concertos and sonatas, he is remembered for his 40 études for the violin, which remain unsurpassed. Beethoven's Kreutzer Sonata is dedicated to him.
